Since the start of the pandemic, audiences have sorely missed the vibe of live music, eagerly awaiting the moment when they can once again see their favorite artists in the flesh. At the Great American Music Hall on October 11 for his tour stop in San Francisco, Adam Melchor brought the excitement of live music back in full force, delivering a fantastic performance with electric energy and sparkling charisma.

Even though this is the first time that Melchor has headlined a tour, he already presents himself as a confirmed and expert musician as if he had been on tour for decades. He lighted up the stage with ease, serenaded and comfortably stunned the audience with every song he played.

The concert made it clear that Melchor has a beautiful and unbreakable connection with his band and his fans. Everyone present was obviously delighted to be there to support him, dancing and dancing; Melchor himself frequently rocked with his group, in turn encouraging the audience to do the same. While the Great American Music Hall is a rather intimate venue with a capacity of around 500 people, Melchor’s voice was powerful and punchy enough to fill a stadium.

In this sense, Melchor is a full-fledged one-man show. A lot of his songs may be acoustic, but even when playing without his band he still offered enough fervor to keep the audience fully engaged. With her endearing charm, positive attitude, and hilarious pre-song jokes, no moment of the show fell flat.

For almost every song, Melchor has shared a witty story to go with it, showing just how personal and intimate his music really is. The melancholy “What a Damn Shame,” Melchor shared, is about a man who got up for a date at a restaurant where Melchor used to perform. The “Jewel” track, on the other hand, uniquely combines poignant and eccentricity; the song is about Melchor’s close relationship with his sister as well as a hoarse rooster crowing in a nearby house when he wrote the song. Each track stood out in its own wonderful way with its unique story, and each segment of the show brought to light an experience or unearthed a new side of Melchor’s personality.

Regardless of the subject, each of Melchor’s songs exuded a sweet desire for authentic connection with others. Complemented by his eloquent lyricism, it was easy for the audience to lose themselves in Melchor’s dreamy voice as he mastered every song of the night. Whether he’s singing an enchanting ballad or swinging to one of his most catchy tunes, his sweet voice is always carried with melodic ease and beautifully suited to change the mood of every song he sings. He also hit well-placed and impressive high notes throughout the night – a highlight being his callback to the delicious fan-favorite ‘Joyride’.

Melchor’s enthusiasm for performing in front of audiences overflowed with each song, and his genuine gratitude for being on stage again was evident. People in the audience were excited to finally listen to his music live rather than streaming it online, and Melchor assured his fans he was just as happy to be there, frequently telling his audience how he was excited to replay it live.

With every song he played happily and every anecdote he shared with a laugh, Melchor’s passion for music shone at the Great American Music Hall. Wherever his career takes him, this sensational gig proved that Melchor’s sunny disposition and his deep and genuine love for the stage will take him far.
