Billy Joel announces one-night-only show at MCG Melbourne

Piano Man Billy Joel will take to the stage Down Under in December for just one night at the MCG Melbourne.

One of the greatest singer/songwriter/composers of modern times, Billy Joel, is coming to Australia to perform a very special one-off show. Brought to you by Frontier Touring, the Victorian Government and ALWAYS LIVE, the music legend will bring his greatest hits to Australia on Saturday December 10, with a historic performance at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

An artist who needs little introduction, Billy Joel is one of the biggest concert draws in the world. Having sold more than 150 million records and won six GRAMMYs from 23 nominations, Joel ranks among the most popular and respected artists in history – the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time and the third best-selling solo artist.

Featuring an Australian-only show at Melbourne’s most iconic stadium, the concert is presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE, a statewide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

“I am happy to announce that I am finally coming to Australia to do an exclusive show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as part of ALWAYS LIVE. It’s been a really long time since I’ve been there, I can’t wait to come and I’m bringing the whole family and we’re going to enjoy it. I’ll see you there,” Joel said.

Joel’s anthology has touched the lives of millions, his impeccable musicality and his transcendent songs recognized around the world. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1999, Joel received the Kennedy Center Honors (one of America’s highest cultural awards) in 2013. In 2014, he received both the Library’s Gershwin Award of the Congress for Popular Song and the unique award – a century ASCAP Centennial Award – the latter given to icons of American music in recognition of their incomparable achievements in their respective musical genres and beyond. In 2016, the Library of Congress selected “Piano Man” for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its “cultural, historical, and artistic significance.” He received numerous other awards, including a Tony (for Movin’ Out, a Broadway musical based on his music), MusiCares Person Of The Year, and induction into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.

‘Piano Man’, ‘You May Be Right’, ‘Always a Woman’, ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’, ‘Uptown Girl’, ‘Big Shot’, ‘It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me’, ‘Only the Good Die Young’, ‘New York State of Mind’… the hunger to see this very influential songwriter remains intact.

“What a boost for Victoria, the music capital, to have one of the greatest artists of our time performing exclusively in Melbourne at one of the biggest stadiums in the world,” said Matt Gudinski, Chairman of ALWAYS LIVE and CEO of Mushroom Group.

“Working with ALWAYS LIVE to bring his show to ‘G’ fulfills a dream my grandfather and I had…Having Billy here in Melbourne is really special.’
